I am a lay theologian and graduate of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at the Catholic University of America. I was fortunate to be in the chapel at Saint Charles Seminary when Saint John Paul II spoke at our seminary during his first apostolic visit to the U.S. Studying his writings and learning about his life has made me a better Catholic and follower of Jesus. My own pilgrimages to Italy, Fatima and Poland were tremendous, grace-filled experiences for me. I have also led the March for Life Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. four times, and travelled to Italy with a group of students. Today I teach Humanities and Literature, specializing in European History. All of these experiences have been extremely enriching! I was blessed to travel to Italy for the first time when I was 12. Saint Peter's Basilica, the Duomo in Florence, and the many, many beautiful sights that I saw gave me a deep appreciation for the heritage of Western civilization and the role of the Catholic Church in shaping history and culture. We live at a time that demands strong faith and a strong witness to faith. Pope Francis reminds us that we are called to be missionary disciples! This is still very much a time for a "new evangelization" in which we rediscover the joys of Catholicism! Traveling on a Youth Pilgrimage to Italy, and especially Assisi where the incorrupt body of Blessed Carlo Acutis, will definitely open one's eyes to the grace of God!
Italy, Portugal and Poland remain my top three favorite travel destinations, with France and Spain right behind them. It is difficult to pick favorite sites because I love to travel and to see new and beautiful places. There is so much beauty, history and culture to learn about and to explore. Going on pilgrimage is much different than traveling as a tourist because of the time devoted to prayer and spiritual growth, but having fun is also definitely a priority! I have found that travelling to shrines and celebrating special feasts at these shrines is something very unforgettable. Pilgrimage is the best way to travel and grow stronger in faith. Catholic pilgrimages are a tremendous grace and blessing for everyone!
